The French first lady has a random cameo in Netflix’s enduringly awful series, which has now decided to up sticks and relocate to Rome
Brigitte Macron has a cameo in the latest series of Emily in Paris (Netflix), and somehow maintains a sense of dignity despite the script being as follows:
Emily (approaching Mme Macron in a restaurant): Vous follow moi dans la Instagram.
Mme Macron: Emily, it’s you! [to a friend] I follow her on Instagram.
Emily: J’adore your country.
Mme Macron: And my country loves you.
Emily: Merci. Is it possible to prendre une photo avec vous, s’il vous plait?
Mme Macron: My pleasure!
And then they pose for an Instagram selfie. Of course they do. Emily in Paris is essentially an Instagram post stretched out over four years.
All credit to the French first lady: she’s good at playing herself. This is not a given, as anyone who remembers the Duchess of York and Richard Branson appearing in a London-set episode of Friends will know.
Mme Macron’s appearance is among a handful of surprises in the last five episodes of this fourth season; the first five were released last month. They open with Emily spending Christmas in the ski resort of Megève after her flight home to Chicago is cancelled (a Planes, Trains and Automobiles tribute?), but the action then moves to Rome. This gives Emily (Lily Collins) the opportunity to rhapsodise over pasta, ride a Vespa past the Coliseum, that sort of thing. She has a new love interest in the form of a dreamy Italian, giving us some blessed relief from the tedious love triangle with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Camille (Camille Razat).
The writers have also decided, thankfully, to introduce some tension in the form of a new character, Geneviève, Sylvie’s sort-of-stepdaughter. When Geneviève (Thalia Besson) fails to land a job as fashion editor Carine Roitfeld’s assistant, Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) takes her on at the agency. Geneviève is American and seems very sweet, but turns out to be a snake intent on stealing Gabriel for herself.
Gabriel’s heart belongs to Emily, though, so now she has two handsome men fighting for her attention. God knows why. She continues to be the worst-dressed woman on Earth. This series may have her in the most terrible outfits yet, including a ski-resort ensemble of white, purple and black yeti jacket, green tights and plaid shorts. Thank heavens for Sylvie, who manages to look understatedly chic and sexy even while stuffing a Christmas turkey.
